Switzerland’s Nico Müller narrowed Rene Rast’s DTM championship lead down to just 14 points after scoring a hugely significant win at the Lausitzring. Pole-sitter Rast (209 points) had led the opening stages of the race, but was forced to park his Audi RS5 DTM with a mechanical issue, allowing Müller (195 points) to lead home his Abt Sportsline team-mate Robin Frijns (NED) and Mike Rockenfeller (GER). Yesterday on a sunny afternoon at the legendary Brands Hatch circuit in Kent, UK, 21-year-old Jamie Chadwick (UK) won the first ever single-seater series for female drivers only, the 2019 W Series championship.
Toro Rosso Formula 1 driver Alexander Albon will join the main Red Bull team from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards, replacing Pierre Gasly. Gasly was drafted into the primary Red Bull line-up as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo for 2019, having impressed in his first full season in F1 with Toro Rosso the year before.
After some fantastic wheel-to-wheel racing, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton passed Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to win the Hungarian Grand Prix with four laps to go, following a second pit stop late in the race to gain an advantage from fresher P Zero Yellow medium tyres. Hamilton, who started third on the grid, caught up with Verstappen again – who claimed a first pole yesterday – after his second stop to reprise their duel and ensure a spectacular finish.
Dave Robson, Senior Race Engineer said the following about the Qualification: We enjoyed a productive morning making full use of the additional set of dry tyres available in FP3 to catch-up on some of yesterday’s lost time. We completed some homework on the hard and medium Pirelli tyres ahead of tomorrow, before turning our attention to qualifying preparation on the soft tyres.
At a press conference at this weekend’s SUPER GT race at Fuji Speedway, Japan, ITR chairman Gerhard Berger and GTA chairman Masaaki Bandoh gave the first detailed look at the regulatory framework for both series’ unique race together in November this year. Labelled the ‘SUPER GT x DTM Dream Race’, the event takes place at Fuji Speedway on November 22-24.
