German driver Sophia Flörsch will become the first female to race in FIA Formula 3

The German driver Sophia Flörsch will become the first female to race in FIA Formula 3, signing with Spanish side Campos Racing for the 2020 season. She will lineup alongside already announced duo Alex Peroni and Alessio Deledda.

The 19-year-old Sophia Flörsch joins on the back of her impressive performances for HWA RACELAB at post-season testing in Valencia, Spain, and in the FIA F3 World Cup, at Macau. Sophia Flörsch will make her official F3 debut less than 18 months after suffering injuries in a horrific crash at the 2018 Macau Grand Prix. Following surgery, Flörsch made a full recovery and contested in the Formula Regional European Championship, where she finished seventh. In recognition of this, the German was presented with a Laureus World Sports Award for World Comeback of the Year.

“I am very happy to be competing in the FIA F3 Championship together with Campos Racing,” Flörsch said. “It is going to be my first season in the actual Formula 3 car with Pirelli tires, DRS and the Mecachrome engine. Without any test days I have to learn a lot, but I am looking forward to competing against the best drivers.

“For me, it’s important to get better each race weekend, work together with the team and have fun. It’s going to be a great year. The experience of Adrian Campos and his team will for sure help me.”

The Grünwald-born Sophia Flörsch made her single-seater debut back in 2015, when she joined the Ginetta Junior Championship and became the youngest driver to win a race in the series. Flörsch also became the first female driver to secure points-paying finishes in ADAC Formula 4.

Sophia Flörsch completes the Campos’ roster for 2020 and will look to help push the team up the table, following their 10th place finish in the teams’ standings last season.
